Re-inventing the Watering Can

User friendly watering can

The watering can is one of the oldest and most common gardening tools. Hozelock, a company that specializes in hosepipes and their attachments, set the brief to reinvent the watering can. The concept initially started as a foldable space-saving watering can. The objective was to reduce the costs in the supply chain (transport and storage costs), which are often higher than manufacturing costs. Whilst developing this concept, it was realised that usability of the product could be greatly improved by including a trigger mechanism to control the water release. This solves the need for the users to have to reposition their hands to balance the watering can during use and makes this concept easier to use whilst offering greater control. The concept was evaluated and proven through a full-size working prototype. Its technical characteristics were developed and specified with the help of Hozelock in consideration of their existing manufacturing facilities.
