Redesigning the Kill Cord
Encouraging use of kill cords and life jackets
The Kill cord is a device used to cut the engine of a motorboat if the driver is thrown from the controls. There have been 15 accidents resulting in loss of life or serious injury caused by the misuse of the kill cord between 2005 and 2013. The primary focus of the project was to design a product that cannot be ignored, forgotten or bypassed by the user. This was achieved by integrating the kill cord with the life jacket. This encourages users to always wear both their kill cord and life jacket at all times. To use the kill cord it is pulled from the console of the boat and connected to the life jacket enabling the engine to be started and run. If this is disconnected at any point the engine will immediately cut out.
