Infrared proximity sensing to analyse tyre treads
Nine percent of all road traffic accidents in the wet on UK roads are caused by drivers travelling with worn tyre treads on their cars. Tyres with a depth of 3mm or below are deemed dangerous by many specialists in the tyre industry. It is estimated that 44% of drivers are traveling with tyres that are below 3mm. Existing solutions have not solved the problem and drivers are still not checking their tyres regularly enough. The brief was initially to focus on making a publically accessible service which could analyse a customer's tyres as they pulled into a fuel station and flag whether a tyre change is becoming necessary. The project's focus quickly became all about developing a system for analysing tyres. The developed prototype uses infrared proximity sensing to quickly and accurately analyse the depth of the tread on a range of tyre tread swatches.
