Rescue Diving Harness and Backplate
Increasing response time in water sport incidents
The aim of this project was to create a SCUBA system that would allow fast response to potentially fatal water sport incidents. It is essential to respond to trapped divers quickly, and to aid in the emergency rescue of water sport competitors, by providing a fast, efficient and above all, a safe rescue. A redesign of the current buoyancy control device will see a more ergonomic, lightweight and multi-functional system. The backplate will allow the user more freedom and greatly improve comfort and support over long periods of time. The backplate will offer essential weight storage, providing stability and more controlled buoyancy whilst in the water by adjusting the centre of gravity. The modular design will permit greater customisation, allowing each user to tailor the system to their specific needs depending on the location and situation of the rescue. The quick release tank attachment will ensure a faster donning time, allowing rapid response to those in need of rescue. Through these developments, the efficiency of the rescue procedure should be greatly improved, reducing the fatality rate in competitive water sports and technical diving. The system has been developed to the point at which the user interaction can be analysed and improved upon, the next stage of development would be a refined, fully functioning prototype.
