Braking System Development
Development of the Braking System for BR-XV Formula Student car.
The aim of this project was to design, specify and test a lightweight, reliable, effective and compact brake system for the new Brunel Racing BR-XV car. The car, which is to be built by Brunel third year students in 2014, further develops such design for possible implementation in next year's BR16. The project demonstrates how the Brunel Racing braking system has been optimised for performance and reliability without compromising safety. Investigating new disc designs with different geometries improves the system's strength and heat dissipation through the use of FEA for Static structural and thermal analysis. Mass reduction was achieved, improving performance, whilst maintaining the safety factor. Aluminium-silicon demonstrates superior properties, when compared with the usual grey cast iron.
