The Dawn of the Imagimals

This project is based on the exciting opportunities that 3D printing provides. This innovative technology is quickly progressing as its full potential is being realised. It is no longer considered as a rapid prototype machine but rather a producer of personalised products. 3D Printing (or Additive Manufacturing) has become recognised as an effective way of creating products that are tailor made to suit the wants and desires of any individual. The technology is developing in such a way that it is becoming increasingly compact and simple to use. It is easy to see the moment of 3D printing from workshops to home offices and it is predicted that it will become integrated into our everyday lives and even have a place in our own homes. It is safe to say that the traditional design process is being disrupted. Various industries have noticed this exhilarating trend and have identified it as an open opportunity. The toy industry is no different. In fact, Hasbro recently announced it has partnered with 3D Systems, a 3D printer distributer, which indicates that it has already noticed the pattern and is moving in that direction. 'Dawn of the Imagimals' is a creative play toy concept combining emerging 3D printing and scanning technologies, toys and children's imagination to create a new multiplatform gameplay. The brief was set by Fuse, a highly creative toy invention, development and licensing company, to explore the possibilities and consequences that 3D printing will have on the toy industry and discover a new way to play that involves the user at all aspects of the process. As a result, this project looks at the how children can be the creators of their own toys. To discover how to provide children with this experience, the background of 3D printing was researched and the principles of what makes a successful toy were analysed. A look at how to simplify the CAD process took place. This was important as children will feel alienated by the current difficult program. Solutions have been discovered, analysed and improved and an exciting gameplay has been achieved. 'Dawn of the Imagimals' is under live review with a major multinational toy company who is actively considering it for the inclusion in its 2016 toy line. Therefore, the actual solution is confidential.
