Task Light for Hospital Wards
The aim of the project was to design a portable luminaire, optimised for use by night-shift medical staff at the bedside. It is primarily for use in multi-occupancy wards, where the need for patients to sleep undisturbed conflicts with nurses' need for optimum light levels when performing essential tasks. The bed-mounted luminaire was designed to provide hands-free illumination of the task area. The control of light using TIR optics proved essential to provide effective illumination levels with minimum spill light. An in-depth lighting analysis confirmed compliance to the relevant Lighting Guide Standards. The aesthetic model demonstrates how the tactile shaped features provide an intuitive control interface for use in low light levels. The proposed design incorporates induction charging in a fully sealed unit to enable high levels of antibacterial cleaning.
