Wireless Sports Performance Monitoring System
This project consists of designing and implementing a wireless sports performance monitoring system that acquires physiological parameters, such as heart rate and EMG signals, combined with GPS parameters to determine speed and distance covered by the athlete. The device is intended to be used in general training and coaching. With the help of this technology, it would be possible for a coach to monitor and potentially analyse an athlete's performance during training. The long term outcome of using this device should lead to enhanced training and better competition results for the athlete. The system design is divided into three main categories: Hardware consisting of microcontroller and sensors, wireless communication link and host PC application. Firstly, the microcontroller was programmed to acquire data from Muscle Sensor, Pulse Sensor and GPS. Once all the parameters were obtained, they were transmitted via the UART serial communication port. Secondly, a wireless communication link was implemented between the hardware and the host PC via XBee modules using ZigBee protocol. The modules were programmed to communicate through the UART serial port with the microcontroller and PC. Finally, a PC application was designed in Matlab to read the transmitted data from acquisition hardware following the communication protocol. The application displays the transmitted data in real time and stores it for future analysis.
