SoundWave is a new way of looking at digital musical instruments. You can play the device moving both hands vertically in the air; one over an ultrasonic sensor and the other an infrared sensor. One hand plays the eight notes of a musical scale, depending on its vertical distance from the sensor. The other hand will either increase or decrease the octave by moving the same way, or act like a piano sustain pedal holding the notes' duration. This project uses PIC microcontrollers programmed with C Code. The simple interface of SoundWave indicates the notes and volume with colour LEDs. The design of the box has been carefully considered in order to be intuitive for anyone to pick up and play. SoundWave's inspiration came from a new approach to the traditional theromin, aiming to achieve specific musical notes using a new digital system. SoundWave is a good starting point for a project to be further developed, due to its many possibilities as a toy to learn music; a new and modern musical instrument; or even part of a DJ's equipment.
