Bistable Living Eyewear Hinge
The brief set by collaborative partner, VARG Eyewear, aimed to create an original screwless hinging solution for their new eyewear collection. The primary aim of the redesign was to tackle fatigue issues with existing barrel hinges, which currently saturate the eyewear market. User research identified that the key characteristics favoured by eyewearers were heavy bistable hinges. Development of the frames was primarily focused on a monolithic living hinge solution supported with a bistable component that could offer the positive feedback favoured by eyewearers while lowering the overall component count. Through Finite Element Analysis (FEA) analysis as well as physical testing of prototypes, the designs could be evaluated in accordance to British standards. The frames used to demonstrate the hinge were also designed for VARG's current eyewear collection, aimed at young professionals. Inspired by Scandinavian design, VARG's frames demonstrate reserved styling, which is reflected in the frames featured, with vivid points of colour added by the acetate inserts. The final design offers the user a hinging system, which sits in line with the exemplar frames offering positive tactile feedback via the bistable component.
