Rehabilitation Following Knee Trauma
The brief was to create a product, using Light.Touch.Matters technology, that allows patients to recover better from trauma surgery through accurate exercise. Trauma was predicted by the World Health Organisation to become the third highest health burden of mankind and due to the ageing population one in three over 65s suffer a fall each year, costing the NHS an estimated £1.7 billion. This project is therefore aimed at creating a product using the new generation of smart materials that combine touch sensitivity with luminosity to aid patient rehabilitation after surgery and primarily focuses on older people. Following interviews one major problem identified was that patients generally do not carry out all of their prescribed exercises effectively, as they find them boring. Therefore, the main objectives were to not only increase the efficiency of the recovery process, but to make the whole experience more enjoyable, in order to motivate patients.
