Smart Sunscreen Packaging
The Smart Sunscreen project is the winning concept from Crown Packaging Design Challenge, where participating teams designed new packaging concepts using printed electronics and metal packaging. People are more aware than ever, that extensive exposure to the sun’s UV-rays causes premature ageing and skin cancer. However, these hazards do not make people enjoy spending time outdoors any less. The solution is a smart sunscreen package, SmarTan.The inspiration for the initial concept was drawn from personal experience, and then extended and backed up with research on consumer behaviour, skin cancer and the sun product market. SmarTan uses printed electronics technology to make people feel more confident about sun protection.
Through research, the main target group was identified as health conscious adults who enjoy outdoor activities. The use of new technology combined with added customer value makes this product perfect for the high-end cosmetics market.
A sensor measures the user’s skin type by analysing the amount of light reflected from the skin. The product’s suitability to the user’s skin type is indicated, guiding the user to use a correct SPF factor. The smart package also calculates the maximum ‘safe’ amount of time in the sun by determining the user’s skin type and the strength of UV radiation. The timer on the bottle then shows the amount of time left and alerts when the time is up. While applying the product, a sensor indicates when enough has been applied for even coverage.
