Combating obesity in future smart cities

It has been predicted that by 2050 half of the United Kingdom’s population will be obese and 70% of the population will be living in a city. Cities are becoming smarter with increased technology, however further research and expert interviewing reveals that future smart city plans lack a strategy to overcome obesity. This is an opportunity to use design to overcome this challenge in the biggest UK city: London. This Design Futures Research focused on six areas of the city that affect obesity: healthcare, food culture, marketing, education, workplace, and mobility. Each area has unique challenges, however key opportunities were discovered where design could drive positive change. The final Design Futures strategy is to change behaviour by seamlessly integrating technology into a designed city layout through transportation methods, work and living spaces, health centres, and services.
