An Experimental Study of Morphing Wings

Assessing the benefits of morphing wing technology on the roll performance of an aircraft

Recent advances in the field of morphing wing technology has meant that more innovative designs can be further developed and conceptualised. The concept of morphing wings to produce superior flight performance qualities has therefore proved to be advantageous in real-world applications.

The premise of this project was fundamentally concerned with the complete wing re-design of a full-scale remote-controlled sports-modelled aircraft. The idea behind this was that this redesigned wing would produce superior aerobatic capabilities, e.g. better roll authority during flight. A number of mathematical, computational and experimental methods were used to verify the improvements in roll performance, as well as the wings’ airworthiness, in terms of airframe structural integrity./p>
