Self Powered Wireless Temperature Sensor Network
With over 6000 flights leaving the UK every day, aircraft safety is one of paramount importance. The fuel tank of an aircraft is located in the wings; the minimisation of ignition sources helps to ensure inflight safety. Airbus created a project scope and patent for 'Self-powered Aircraft Sensor Senders'. This project developed one element of this by innovating the design of aircraft fuel tanks' temperature sensors. Currently, temperature sensors are wired to a processing system and fitted to a 10kg wiring harness designed to evade internal ignition source hazards and external electro-magnetic interference and susceptibilities. The creation of a self-powered temperature sensor would eliminate the need for a wiring harness, providing enormous benefits. Proof of concept has been established and a fully functional self-powered wireless temperature sensor system was created.
