Near Field Acoustic Levitation Linear Bearing
Near field acoustic levitation (NFAL) is a phenomenon that occurs as two conforming surfaces approach each other; normally one will be vibrating, the other static. The result is a time averaged mean positive pressure field which is capable of sustaining load. The aim of the project was to develop upon previous works in the field and develop an NFAL linear bearing that tests certain design aspects with the target of achieving improved levitation pressure. The project involved design, analysis, manufacture, and validation via experimentation. With such a unique field of work came many challenges but the resulting bearing and linear slideway perform excellently with at least fifteen percent levitation pressure advantage at maximum capacity.
