Workplace 2030 - managing stress

Designing a work environment and its relationship with human health and well-being has always been a passionate topic among designers and architects. Research shows that technology developments and automation dramatically reduce human physical activity. Stress and poor diet further contribute to the growing obesity epidemic. This does not look like a promising future for the next generation unless we start taking care of our health and well-being at work. This project looks at scenarios in the near future to understand how users' wellbeing will be affected by the changing technology in the work environment. Physical and mental state will still remain as a measure of good health, however users will have more control of the artefacts affecting their well-being. Evolving technology and wearable computing will play a key role in the healthcare industry and therefore Omnime was designed with this in mind for the users of 2030. Omnime is a work-life balance tracker designed for a workplace in the near future. It measures heart rate, body temperature, skin perspiration levels and physical activity throughout the day to define the stress factor. Stress factor is the final number which summarises all readings and provides user with the real time information about their health and well-being. This information is displayed as a spirit level – the green bubble in the centre of the display indicates that the user's stress factor is equal to 0. If the spirit level is imbalanced it will change its colour to orange or even red (depending on the stress factor) and will be located further from the centre of display. Users can analyse this information, track their health vitals and make changes to lifestyle, or even work environment. Omnime has an integrated access control system which can serve as an identity card in any organisation granting access to restricted areas as well as online work environments. The integrated access control enables Omnime to send signals to objects controlled by the security system. This allows users to adjust their work environment in order to reduce the stress factor. Omnime has integrated voice controls and can adjust light, temperature and air quality in any work environment. Omnime tracks user's health status, stress factor changes and general activities (like environment control). This information is available not only to the direct user, but is also sent to the Omnime Wellness team. This team is responsible for the daily users' health monitoring in order to prevent early illnesses. Moreover, the team can also analyse the data and understand what causes stress peaks in the work environment as well as how the users are dealing with it. Omnime is the next generation work-life balance tracker which helps to keep your spirit levels up.
