The Puffry Tobacco Smoke Analyser (TSA)
This study details the design, fabrication and testing of an innovative custom made routine analytical tobacco smoking machine, for the investigation of smoke yields in a range of standard commercially available cigarettes. Both main and side stream (passive) generated tobacco smoke yields were analysed for emission concentration (Carbon Monoxide, Nitrogen and Sulphur Oxide) and toxicology using a Portable Flue Gas Analyser System. Particulate matter physical characteristics and tar content were observed using a Scanning Electron Microscope. The results obtained provide significant evidence to support existing tobacco smoking epidemiological studies and bring to light an alternative novel approach for generating and analysing main and side stream tobacco smoke in a controlled and repeatable manner. The device is called The Puffry Tobacco Smoke Analyser (TSA).
