Child's Water Rescue Device for Rural Bangladesh
In Bangladesh 18,000 children drown every year; a high proportion of these deaths could be prevented. In an effort to combat this, an affordable floating rescue device has been developed, to be used by children in the event of an emergency. The device is in the form of a small seat to be used within the home and taken by a child when required. This ensures that it is useful, well received by families and increases a child's awareness of water risks, reducing the likelihood of an incident occurring. The extensive plastic bottle recycling industry in Bangladesh makes plastic an ideal material to be reformed into a durable, long lasting and sustainable product. The developed prototypes were successfully tested with over twenty children of the target age group, informing appropriate adaptations to the final design.
