Investigation into the design of sustainable supermarkets

Using documents provided by a contractor working on a store for a national supermarket, the group focussed on the following four criteria: Drainage, structure, materials and management. The overall roof shape is designed to drain water effectively, while allowing natural light into the structure to illuminate both shop floor and staff facilities to provide a more pleasant environment for customers and staff whilst saving energy.

The materials chosen emphasise the importance of low embodied carbon, having effective insulation to reduce the heat required for the operation of the structure. Sustainable drainage is incorporated in the form of a soakaway system. The whole structure retains the small footprint of the case study, so that other areas of the site may be used for residential buildings.
