Remote controlled model aircraft for the 2011 Heavy Lift competition

This project aimed to design and build an electrically powered, remote controlled model aircraft to compete in the 2011 BMFA heavy lift competition. The aim of the competition is to transport as much water as possible around a predetermined flight course within 10 minutes. Rules state that the aircraft must be fixed wing with a maximum wingspan of 1500mm and use only certain electrical components.

Design of the aircraft is based on the study of existing aircraft along with structural and aerodynamic analysis involving FEM and CFD software. Reliance on each individual’s expertise and teamwork allowed for effective integratration of different aircraft parts into the overall design. Group organisation was also critical in ensuring that the aircraft is produced on budget, on schedule and to specification.
