Electro-magnetic braking system for the 737-500

Efficient retardation is extremely important for active aircraft safety; retardation systems include brakes and hydraulic systems engines.

The focus of this project was the hydraulically actuated annular disc brakes fitted to modern passenger aircrafts.

The aim was to design a lighter, more efficient and airworthy braking system.

The design incorporates an electromagnetic, instead of hydraulic, system. The reduction of weight coupled with newly designed silicon-carbon- matrix rotor and stator discs helps reduce the weight of the brake unit substantially and improve fuel economy. The rotor and stator discs are designed to minimize degradation and wear and reduce the level of maintenance required for inspection and repair.

The design meets all relevant performance and safety criteria including international legislation.
